To visit

In 1996 the Autonomous Province of Bolzano acquired the "Ciastel de Tor" Castle in order to establish a museum dedicated to the Ladin culture and its history. Now you can visit the "Museum Ladin Ciastel de Tor".
The museum round tour explains some of the special circumstances surrounding Ladin history and of the life in the five Ladin valleys in the heart of the Dolomites, where Ladin is still the spoken language: the Badia Valley, Gardena Valley, Fassa Valley, Livinallongo and Ampezzo. The museum tour points out some of the important influences of supra-regional events on Ladin culture in the Dolomites and it proves the connection between the shape of the landscape and the way of living. The Museum Ladin is dedicated to men and women living in this region and to all those who come to this special landscape from near and far.

THE MUSEUM IN TEODONE
This is the museum of customs and traditions in the Province of Bolzano. It was founded in 1976 and is located in Teodone near Brunico. It is an ethnographic museum with part of the museum outdoors.
The main centre of the museum is the "Mair am Hof" farm, which was one of the four farms "Meierhöfe" in Teodone. This manor house provides evidence on how the people lived. Beside the manor house we find a typical Tyrolean farm, which were mostly self-sufficient, the house of the lower class and finally the most important technical inventions like mills, iron forges and more.

Another peculiarity is the garden area in renaissance arch art, one of the most representative examples in the whole of South Tyrol.
Remarkable is also the reception hall of the Prince-Bishop who ruled from 1730-1737.

PARISH CHURCH OF PIEVE DI MAREBBE The The Badia Valley was colonized at the North of Pieve di Marebbe, which was definitely the first inhabited centre. Characteristic for these settlements is the village centre. It consists of only a few houses, which are all arranged around the parish church and its Gothic belfry (56 m) which rules its surroundings. The Pieve parish church can be considered the mother church, since the entire religious life in the valley depended on it.
The current building is of baroque style in the shape of a cross. Particularily beautiful and historically interesting is the main altar in renaissance style, which was constructed because of a promise made during the years of the plague in 1636. At the centre you can admire the beautiful Mary (Santa Maria d'La Pli) statue. From 1700 to 1914 the deanery's residence was located in Pieve di Marebbe.
The Pieve di Marebbe church was and still is a place of pilgrimage for the inhabitants of Marebbe, the Badia Valley and of the adjacent Puster Valley.

PARISH CHURCH OF S.VIGILIO The parish church of San Vigilio di Marebbe represents a truly artistic jewel in late-gothic style for the village and the entire community. The frescos inside the church are a work of art of the famous painter Matthäus Günther, who was then the dean of the Augsburg Academy. When you enter the church you will not only see the beautiful frescos by Günther, but also two elegant side choirs, a splendid pulpit and an image of Maria, a real piece of art of plaster cast. An artistic work of art is also the 14 images of the Via Crucis by Bolzano painter Karl Henrici (1783).

THE MONUMENT OF CATARINA LANZ During the battles against Napoleon's French troops, the young girl of Marebbe, Catarina Lanz, born in S.Vigilio di Marebbe in 1771, showed her braveness. At 26 years of age, in 1797, she fought in Spines, a small village near Bressanone, armed with nothing more than a pitch fork. She defended the village church and the cemetery from violation by the intruders.
The bronze statue is located in the village centre of San Vigilio and is a reminder of the young hero of Marebbe. It is a piece of work from the Ladin sculptore Otto Irsara from Badia.

The characteristic "VILES" in Pieve di Marebbe. The Val Badia Valley is one of four valleys in the Dolomites extending from the Sella Massif. In these side valleys on the hills exposed to the sun we find agglomerates called "Viles", which provide the traditional settlement structure of the Badia Valley with a special note.
These small agglomerates were established around a small central square called "vila", which was enriched with a fountain and an oven. These were used communally by all inhabitants together.
For many centuries these houses where constructed with nearby materials like stone and wood. A trip to the past.

FARMER'S MARKETS Farmer's markets take place every first Thursday of the month at the square in San Vigilio.
The tables are filled with many delicious, healthy and genuine delights: cheeses, meat products, schnapps and liquors, vegetables, pastries, textiles and utensils - this occasion is not to be missed. The exact dates of the markets will be published on the notice board at the Tourism Association.
